Turning is an industrial production process obtained by chip removal. The workpiece is fixed to a spindle and rotated while the cutting tool moves along the workpiece, ending in the required shape.
Metal turning usually involves two processing stages:
- Roughing: this first stage aims at removing most of the residual machining allowance, by using specific tools developed to withstand strong stresses;
- Finishing: during this second stage, the workpiece is processed to obtain a final surface that meets expected dimensions, tolerances and roughness.
