Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is recognized as one of the most stable plastics in terms of thermal properties as it does not undergo structural decomposition up to 260°C.

The use of PTFE, a fluoropolymer also known as Teflon, is widespread in different industrial sectors.

As with any fluorinated polymer, it has outstanding performance properties due to its low coefficient of friction, high resistance to external factors, excellent non-stick properties and withstands extreme temperatures, between -200 °C and +260 °C.

PTFE is suitable for sealing due to its low mechanical strength, including tensile strength and compression, even under light loads. The PFTE best mechanical property, at a wide range of operating temperatures, is its compressive strength at constant strain.

PTFE ADVANTAGES

Fluoropolymers highly withstands oxidation and retain their properties even at extremely low temperatures. Microorganism attacks do not affect their resistance and they are absolutely not biodegradable. The low friction of PTFE’s surface results in outstanding humidity resistance and foreign matter adhesion. Polytetrafluoroethylene is inherently pure therefore it does not cause chemical pollution and it resists to aggressive chemical agents in the long term.

FILLED PTFE

PTFE is most commonly known by its trade names, such as Teflon, Fluon, Algoflon, Hostaflon, Inoflon, Guaflon and MecFlon, where stabilizing and fluidizing components enrich the polymer and improve application possibilities. Silica, carbon, bronze, stainless steel or barium sulphate fillers are commonly added to the polymer in order to upgrade its performance in mechanical, pneumatic, chemical and pharmaceutical applications.

To improve its compression and wear resistance, reduce its thermal expansion coefficient, vary its volume and surface resistivity, improve its hardness and enhance the already outstanding properties of this product, PTFE is filled with special additive powders such as:

GLASS FIBRE

Improves wear and chemical resistance, except for alkalis and hydrofluoric acid.
Suitable for applications that require both creep and chemical resistance.

CARBON

Good thermal conductivity and deformation resistance.
Suitable for applications that require electrostatic charge dissipation.

GRAPHITE

Very low friction coefficient, medium compressive strength. Good wear resistance.
Suitable for high speed applications.

BRONZE

High compressive resistance. Good wear resistance, high thermal conductivity but limited resistance to chemical agents.
Suitable for high speed applications and without lubrication.

MOS2

High non-stick properties. Low static friction coefficient. Fair deformation resistance.
Suitable for applications on components with good resistivity properties.
